About us

Cewri (pronounced KEW-ree), meaning “Giants” in Welsh, is a Wales-based organisation focused on tackling systemic design challenges.

The name comes from the famous quote; "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants," coined by Sir Isaac Newton in a 1675 letter to Robert Hooke, signifying that scientific and intellectual progress builds upon the foundational knowledge and discoveries of predecessors, allowing later thinkers to see further by leveraging past work. Newton used it to humbly acknowledge the contributions of earlier thinkers like Descartes, Copernicus, and Galileo, whose work formed the base for his own breakthroughs. The phrase illustrates that new knowledge isn't created in a vacuum; it's a cumulative process where each generation of thinkers uses the understanding of those before them to reach new heights.

Cewri is a business built on this premise. Taking system wide, global challenges and bringing together the best ideas and knowledge on the subjects to inform change.

Founded by Joanna Goodwin, a senior leader with over 20 years’ experience in government, Cewri will support organisations to design and improve services that are accessible, sustainable, and inclusive, with a unique emphasis on bilingual and multilingual design.

“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.”

Our Services

Every customer counts and poor usability and inaccessible experiences quietly drive people away.

User-centred, inclusive and accessible design of your digital products and services improves satisfaction for everyone, and reduces legal and reputational risk. The result? Higher conversion, stronger loyalty, and a broader market reach. When your experience works for more people, your business performs better. Inclusive design isn’t just the right thing to do- it’s a smart investment in growth, retention, and long-term revenue.

Usability

Design for people. User-centred design boosts conversion rates by up to 200%. Drive higher ROI (~£100 for every £1 invested), reduce bounce rates by 20-40%, and increase trust - leading to more sales and loyal customers.

Accessibility

Disabled people in the UK have an estimated £274bn annual spending power yet many businesses are not accessible. An accessibility audit and inclusive redesign improves usability, completion rates, SEO, and reach.

Multilingual Design

Businesses that invest in language capabilities are 30% more successful in exporting than those that do not. Go beyond translation with culturally informed design that feels natural, clear, and effective for every user.

Digital services are now one of the fastest-growing sources of carbon emissions, yet most organisations have no visibility of their digital footprint.

They don’t know:

  • How many sites, apps, content systems and templates they operate

  • Which digital journeys are energy-heavy, slow or wasteful

  • Which design choices increase server load, data transfer and device energy use

Digital sustainability is treated as:

  • A reporting problem

  • A one-off audit

  • Or a carbon offset exercise

We can help you to actively manage and reduce the environmental impact of your digital estates.
